Fly or take the ferry? Here is how to get to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Singapore and Thailand, and how to collect your rental car the moment you arrive.
Getting to Langkawi is easy once you know the options. You can fly directly to Langkawi International Airport, or take a ferry from Kuala Perlis, Kuala Kedah, Penang or Satun in Thailand. This guide compares them, and shows how to have your rental car waiting when you arrive.

By air
Langkawi International Airport (LGK) has flights from Kuala Lumpur, Penang and other major Malaysian cities, plus selected international routes. From Kuala Lumpur the flight is about an hour. Schedules and routes change, so check with the airlines for the flights that operate on your dates.
By ferry
Ferries arrive at the Kuah jetty on Langkawi. Typical crossing times are:
| From | Approximate time | Best if |
|---|---|---|
| Kuala Perlis (Perlis) | About 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes | You are driving or taking a bus from the south or from Kuala Lumpur |
| Kuala Kedah (Kedah) | About 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours | You are coming from Alor Setar or the Kedah area |
| Penang | About 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours | You are already in Penang and want to combine both islands |
| Satun (Thailand) | About 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes | You are travelling from southern Thailand |
Times are approximate and change with the operator and sea conditions. Always confirm the current timetable before you travel.
Driving to the ferry
From Kuala Lumpur it is a long road trip to Kuala Perlis, so many visitors prefer to fly. If you do drive up, leave your own car on the mainland and collect a rental car on the island instead. It saves the cost and the hassle of taking a car across by ferry, and you get a car that is ready for island roads.
Collecting your rental car on arrival
We hand over cars at two places at no extra pickup fee: Langkawi Airport (Door 2) and the Langkawi Ferry Jetty. Hotel delivery is also available for a small fee, shown when you choose the location. Here is how to make arrival smooth:
- Book before you travel. Choose your dates, pickup place and car online. The booking deposit confirms your car and is part of the rental price.
- Bring your documents. Your driving licence, passport or IC, and a card for the security deposit. Read the licence requirements for driving in Langkawi if you are a foreign visitor.
- Mind late arrivals. A pickup before 7:00 AM or after 11:00 PM carries a small odd-hour surcharge. If your flight lands very late, check the total when you book.
- Give yourself time. The handover usually takes 10 to 15 minutes when your documents and payment are ready. See what to expect at pickup.
Free pickup at Langkawi Airport (Door 2) and the Langkawi Ferry Jetty.
